Nillion is a decentralized platform that lets organizations and developers run computations on encrypted information and keep that data stored without exposing raw inputs. By combining secret-sharing techniques with multiparty computation and homomorphic encryption, it creates a privacy-first environment useful for AI, finance, healthcare, identity, and any application that needs confidentiality by design.

The Architecture: How Nillion Computes Without Decrypting

Processing Layer (Petnet)

The processing layer—often called Petnet—is where distributed nodes jointly execute computations on secret-shared inputs. Because data is split into shares and processed across many participants, no individual node ever reconstructs the original values. Coordination Layer (nilChain)

The coordination layer manages network-level bookkeeping: payments, incentives, staking, and governance. It is built on a Cosmos SDK based chain, so it focuses on resource allocation and security rather than running general-purpose smart contracts. This separation helps keep coordination lightweight and auditable.

Blind Modules: Developer Tools for Private Logic

Blind Modules provide reusable cryptographic building blocks so developers can integrate privacy-preserving features without implementing low-level protocols themselves. Two core cryptographic approaches power these modules:

  • Multi-Party Computation (MPC): Splits computation among many parties so the result is produced without any single party seeing the full inputs.
  • Homomorphic Encryption (HE): Allows mathematical operations over encrypted values, yielding encrypted outcomes that can be revealed only by authorized parties.

Common blind modules include:

  • nilDB: A distributed, privacy-focused database that stores sensitive records as secret shares across nodes so data remains inaccessible to any single operator.
  • nilAI: A module that enables private AI workflows by running model training or inference on encrypted datasets, letting teams build machine-learning features without exposing raw training data.
  • nilVM: A Python-based environment where developers can write privacy-aware applications and sign transactions using MPC-based key management.
